Q: email security?
Is there a way to access yahoo usernames used on my computer to send email from? I am having major security issues. Someone has used a yahoo email cocunt but have matched it somehow to the IP address of my comcast account on the same computer. They somehow hacked or forged or whatever the term is the info to make it look as though MY computer is the source computer.

A: Change your yahoo and comcast passwords immediately. Someone could have guessed your yahoo one and if you have your comcast as your backup email they would have gotten it when they hacked into your acct. If you recal when you signed up for a yahoo acct they ask for a second email address thats not yahoo. If you used your comcast one it on your acct information. When you change your password make it alpha numeric and more then 8 characters and don't make it anything anyone can guess, like a name, date or phone number. The first 8 characters are easy to crack if they have a cracking program. So the longer the better and turn off the remember password in messenger for awhile. It sounds like someone used a program to track your ip address, so also contact your internet service provider. If your on cable or dsl your ip address is static and tell them to change your IP and tell them your ip address has been comprimised. They can do it in seconds for you. If your on a telephone dial up your ip changes everytime you log in, so it's not an issue. Good Luck!

Q: How can I see if my email security has been compromised?
I came into my email today, and found that one of my emails had been read. I wonder if someone has hacked into my email. I changed my password again. Is there a way to track if and who got into my email? d

A: There's no way to see if someone has read an email unless you have direct access to the email server's logs. So, if the email server is at your work.. then this may be possible if they are logging logins to the email accounts (which they probably aren't). Most likely you either have given someone access to your account (such as logging in at their computer and saving your info) or you have some auto feature on that is marking it as read after X seconds. If you are using a web based email program like yahoo, gmail, hotmail... etc.. I suggest you check your settings and make sure that noone has setup a forwarding or secondary email address onto your account and that you not only change the password to something very strong (minimum 8 characters.. using uppercase, lowercase, numbers, AND special characters) AND you change your security questions and answers. If you continue to have a problem I suggest you contact the technical support or abuse department of your email provider. Good Luck

Q: When it comes to email security, is it possible for an unitended recipient to intercept the email?
Can they do it unknowingly to the sender/recipient? Please document your answer. Thank you.

A: Unintentionally, probably not. But there is a security testing suite, Dsniff, which can be used on LANs or on the internet which has emailsnarf. It is possible to detect the presence of the attack by the ACK storm that it provokes. It works by desynchronizing the ends of a TCP connection, and I m not going to get specific on how to attack TCP because some script kiddies might be reading this. You can google for TCP vulnerabilities. I have never met a script kiddie who would do real work. The Dsniff suite is for security testing. Unfortunately, unless you are using a hardened linux/UNIX server with mostly secure connections and detectors, it can effectively attack whenever it is about 7 hops away from client and server. Use of emailsnarf against real people's email accounts is illegal unless you are the employer of said person and you have provided them an account to use. Normally, emailsnrf would be used against dummy accounts with dummy data to test security. So yes, your mail can be intercepted, but it takes a real cracker to do it, not some script kiddie who doesn't understand the principles or know how to program. And I m not providing any more documentation. This post is dangerous enough as is. Look it up yourself if you really want to know, and be prepared for a learning experience about serials and windows.

Q: Is confirming an email address a security feature of websites?
most websites that you sign up to ask for you to confirm your email address. Is this to help with security?

A: No, it's not really for security. It's more to make sure that you're an actual person and not a bot that's spamming the website. In the case of "I forgot my password," though, it is for security to make sure you're actually you and not someone else try to crack into your account.
